DEFINITIONS OF THE INDICATORS
Estimated number of pregnant women living with HIV:
Estimated number of pregnant women living with HIV as of 2010.
Reported number of pregnant women living with HIV who received the most effective ARV regimens for PMTCT: Number of women testing HIV positive during visits to antenatal clinics who were provided with the most effective antiretrovirals (ARVs) to prevent mother-to-child transmission. The value excludes single-dose nevirapine where reported by countries.
Estimated percentage of pregnant women living with HIV who received the most effective ARV regimens for PMTCT: Calculated by dividing the reported number of pregnant women living with HIV who received the most effective ARV regimens for PMTCT by the estimated unrounded number of HIV-infected pregnant women in 2010 (based on UNAIDS/WHO methods). Ranges in coverage estimates are based on plausibility (uncertainty) bounds in the denominator, i.e., low and high estimated number of pregnant women living with HIV. The point estimates and ranges are given for countries with a generalized epidemic, whereas only ranges are given for countries with a low or concentrated epidemic. For further information, see Annex 10 of Global HIV/AIDS Response: Epidemic update and health sector progress towards universal access, Progress Report 2011.

NOTES
–   Data not available.
*   Single-dose nevirapine is no longer recommended by WHO.  If a country reported a value for single-dose nevirapine, then that value has been excluded from the total.
a   As only the most effective regimens as recommended by WHO are reported here, the value for single-dose nevirapine value has been excluded from the total. In case the country also reported a number of women receiving an unspecified antiretroviral medicine, this has proportionally increased the value for single-dose nevirapine deducted from the reported total.
b   The data are under-reported, incomplete or are not representative of the population.
c   The estimates of the number of pregnant women living with HIV needing antiretroviral medicine for preventing mother-to-child transmission are currently being reviewed and will be adjusted, as appropriate, based on ongoing data collection and analysis. Some countries have therefore requested that only a range be published or no needs estimates at all.
d   Data were collected from CWM Hospital, Lautoka Hospital and Labasa Hospital.
f   Two separate reports were received from Sudan: Southern Sudan reported 559 in 2010; Northern Sudan reported 110 for the reporting period from January to December 2010, giving a total of 669.  Together, single-dose nevirapine totalled to 390 (Southern Sudan reported 382; Northern Sudan reported 8).  When single-dose nevirapine is excluded, the value of the most effective ARV regimens is 279.
g   The data may include double counting.
i   Two separate reports were received from the United Republic of Tanzania: Tanzania Mainland reported 80,748 to December 2010; Zanzibar reported 310 for the reporting period from January to December 2010, giving a total of 81,058.  Together, single-dose nevirapine totalled to 22,897 (Tanzania Mainland reported 22,686; Zanzibar reported 211).  When single-dose nevirapine is excluded, the value of the most effective ARV regimens is 58,161.
