DEFINITIONS OF THE INDICATORS
Reported number and percentage of infants born to HIV-infected pregnant women started on cotrimoxazole prophylaxis:
Number and estimated coverage of infants born to HIV-infected mothers started on cotrimoxazole prophylaxis within two months of birth as of 2010.
Estimated number of children living with HIV in need of ART: Estimated number of children (0–14 years old) living with HIV in need of antiretroviral treatment (ART) as of 2010.
Number of children receiving ART: Reported number of children (0–14 years old) living with HIV receiving ART as of 2010.
Percentage of children in need receiving ART: Calculated by dividing the number of children receiving ART by the estimated number of children in need of ART.  Ranges in coverage estimates are based on plausibility (uncertainty) bounds in the denominator, i.e., low and high estimated number of children living with HIV in need of antiretroviral therapy.  The point estimates and ranges are given for countries with a generalized epidemic, whereas only ranges are given for countries with a low or concentrated epidemic. For further information, see Annex 10 of Global HIV/AIDS Response: Epidemic update and health sector progress towards universal access, Progress Report 2011.

NOTES
b   The latest reported data are as of December 2009.
c   The latest reported data are as of December 2008.
d   An estimated 12,490 infants are reported to have been tested; however, only 6850 had reported results. The data did not specify when the test was done, so many infants may have been tested after two months of age.
e   The latest reported data are to December 2009.
f   The data are under-reported, incomplete or are not representative of the population.
g   The latest reported data are to September 2010.
h   The latest available breakdowns refer to partial data – for example, without private-sector data – or cumulative data sets and do not reflect national-level data. See Annex 3 for national-level data.
i   The data may be under-reported.
j   As these data are not fully captured at the national level, the data for infants born to women living with HIV receiving a virological test by two months of age have been used as a proxy for infants receiving cotrimoxazole prophylaxis within two months of birth.
k   The data are reported for the period July 2009 – June 2010.
l   Estimates of the number of people needing antiretroviral therapy are currently being reviewed and will be adjusted, as appropriate, based on ongoing data collection and analysis. Some countries have therefore requested that only a range be published or no needs estimate at all.
m   Data were collected from CWM Hospital, Lautoka Hospital and Labasa Hospital.
o   The data are reported for the period September 2009 – September 2010.
q   The latest available breakdowns are not as recent as the latest reported national-level data. See Annex 3 of Global HIV/AIDS Response: Epidemic update and health sector progress towards universal access, Progress Report 2011 for the latest reported national-level data.
r   The latest reported data are to November 2010.
s   Although no report has been received from the Russian Federation, for the analysis throughout the report, based on previous reports, an estimated 4% of the people receiving antiretroviral therapy in the Russian Federation are assumed to be children.
u   Two separate reports were received from Sudan: Southern Sudan reported 25 in 2010; Northern Sudan reported no data in 2010.
x   The data are reported for the period July 2009 – June 2010.
y   The data are only from a few facilities, since data tools were only recently adjusted to collect data for this indicator.
aa   Two separate reports were received from the United Republic of Tanzania: Tanzania Mainland reported 15 300 to December 2010; Zanzibar reported that data are not available for the reporting period from January to December 2010.
dd   The data are reported for the period November 2009 – September 2010.
