REVISIONS TO MICS MANUAL

November 1999

The following changes were made to the MICS manual which was posted to the childinfo website in August 1999 to reflect changes made to the questionnaire, feedback received during two recent MICS workshops for the EAPRO and TACRO UNICEF regions, as well as work on development of data processing packages for MICS surveys, and global databases on water and sanitation. A decision was also made to change from a de facto to a de jure sample which resulted in several changes in the questionnaire, as well as the manual. Several typos which appeared in the earlier version were also corrected.

CHAPTER 1

Table 1.4, p. 1.16 – "rainwater" was added as a source of safe drinking water.

CHAPTER 3

Household Listing Form (p. 3.15) - Because of the change from de facto to de jure sample, the phrase "together with any guests of the household who stayed there the previous night" was taken out of the first para.

Tetanus Toxoid Module (p. 3.24) – Second paragraph was deleted.

Maternal and Newborn Health Module (Second para) – Sentence with reference to chapter 7 was deleted.

Immunization Module – This section was rewritten to reflect the changes made in the questionnaire.

APPENDIX 1 – INTERVIEWER INSTRUCTIONS

Household Listing Form (p. A1.6) – References to guests or visitors of the household who stayed the night were taken out of para para 3, and instructions for column 1 and column 2.

Child mortality module – Question 6 – The word "not" was inserted between "daughters" and "living" on line 1.

Care of illness module – Questions 2 – The wording of the question was revised to reflect the change made to the questionnaire. It now reads "In the last two weeks, has (name) had any other illness, such as cough or fever, or any other health problem?"

Immunization module – This section was rewritten to reflect the changes made in the questionnaire.

Anthropometry module – Question 1 with check for BCG scar was deleted and subsequent questions were renumbered accordingly.

APPENDIX 3 – INDICATORS FOR GLOBAL REPORTING

Changes to Table:

Goal 4 – Use of Safe Drinking Water – Footnote 5 was changed to read 6 in the denominator column.

Changes to footnotes:

Footnote 8 – Changed to read "Please see footnote 6" not footnote 5, to correct for typo made in previous version.

Footnote 11 – Net primary school attendance rate – Added " ...or Q.18=1"

Footnote 30 – Tetanus toxoid coverage – Deleted the word "living".

Footnote 40 – Revised to read: Child Labor Module, [Q.3=1 OR 2] OR [Q.6=1 AND (Q.7/7) > 4hrs.] OR [Q.8=1]. Note: This indicator should also be calculated separately for children working outside the home, and for paid and unpaid work.
